Wisdom from Psalm 49

Do not fear when scary things happen in the world

"Why should I fear when evil days come,
when wicked deceivers surround me -
those who trust in their wealth
and boast of their great riches?"
Psalm 49:5-6

Notice at the end of this sentence that the wicked deceivers are those who:
1) trust in their wealth, and
2) brag about all the money they have.

Are people like that surrounding you and making you feel bad that you don't have enough retirement or that you aren't going to live a good life. Do not fear!

As good as a dead dog

"No man can redeem the life of another
or give God a ransom for him -
the ransom for a life is costly,
no payment is ever enough -
that he should live and not see decay.
For all can see that wise men die;
the foolish and the senseless alike perish
and leave their wealth to others,
Their tombs will remain their houses forever,
their dwelling for endless generations,
though they had named lands after themselves.
But man, despite his riches, does not endure;
he is like the beasts that perish.
This is the fate of those who trust in themselves,
and of their followers who approve their sayings."
Psalm 49:5-11

"A man who has riches without understanding is like the beasts that perish." Psalm 49:20

Here is how we'd say it in south Georgia,

"A person who is rich but doesn't understand that there is more to life than money is as good for nothing as a dead dog."

Keep perspective, Christian

"But God will redeem my life from the grave;
he will surely take me to himself. Selah
Do not be overawed when a man grows rich,
when the splendor of his house increases;
for he will take nothing with him when he dies,
his splendor will not descend with him.
Though whle he lived he counted himself blessed -
and men praise you when you prosper -
he will join the generation of his fathers,
who will never see the light of life."
Psalm 49:16-19
The wise George Mueller said,

"The beginning of anxiety is the end of faith and the beginning of true faith is the end of anxiety."

Yes, we should plan for the future. But when we are asked to walk on the water in the midst of the storms look at the face of the Savior, not at the waves and certainly not at naysayers or the unwise who surround us. You will be discouraged if you listen to the people who value life by wealth or beauty.

Pull up a chair and have a talk

"Then king David went in and sat before the Lord and he said, " 2 Samuel 7:18

This is comforting to me. Often, I have had the best prayers of my life sitting.

I do often kneel to pray because somewhere somehow I have gotten the impression that tells God of my humility and need for him. However, isn't the simple act of prayer saying that.

I pray lying down in my bed and seated at the supper table and even doing the laundry (those are often cries for help -- hee hee!)

But here we see "the man after God's own heart" after receiving the "Davidic Covenenant" that Jesus would be in his lineage in verses 8-16, coming in to sit down and pray.

I have known people who had things wrong with their knees who could not kneel at certain times and events and apologized. Somehow I wonder if people made them feel like less because they couldn't.

I find this comforting because sometimes I just want to sit before the Lord and have a talk. I believe this verse releases me to do so without feeling that twinge of guilt that perhaps I am not giving my best prayer because I'm not on my knees or face.

I think there is a time and place for each, however, I believe it is not the state of the body which man sees (many people pray with face towards heaven, eyes closed, and hands lifted, do they not?) but rather the state of the heart.

This is about me and God -- no one else. Please, do not make the mistake that I have for many years of discounting the prayers I have prayed while seating on my round bottom.

Lord, I am here with all of my heart. May my prayers be pleasing incense to you and my body is here in humble contrition. In Jesus name. Amen.

Tongue control

Think before speaking.

People who say, "I say whatever I think" are just as crude as those who do not hold back their bodily functions in public. Just because you "feel like it" does not mean it is appropriate.

We must prayerfully consider our own words -- is it of benefit? Is it helpful? Is it loving?

"Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing." Proverbs 12:18

"A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understand is even tempered. Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue." Proverbs 17:27-28

"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." Ephesians 4:29

"Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies. Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it." Psalm 34:13-14

If I have nothing beneficial to say - I should keep quiet. I have to wonder if more people had tongue control if there would be less of a need for gun control. So many life changing problems start with words.
