All that night

"The Lord caused the sea to go back... all that night." Exodus 14:21

We all experience nights. We experiences times of drought where we struggle with prayer and communication with God. We have times where our faith wavers on the edge of unbelief and desitution. That is indeed part of the human experience.

The Israelites waited on the Egyptians to come and kill them. They had fled the land of the Egyptians just to come be slaughtered in the desert and returned to forced captivity. The pillar of fire that separated them from the Egyptians seemed thin as they could see the silhouettes of angry men in chariots with spears jabbing at the swirling fire. How long would the pillar hold? How long would it be before the Egyptians found a way around.

We wait in the night for our greatest fears to take hold of us. We have fled the land of earthly pleasures to follow Christ just to have our greatest fears take us in the night. Why should we follow Christ at all. The everlasting arms protecting us from danger seemed there one moment and to dissappear the next. We can see the silhouettes of angry men and unkind words jabbing at those loving arms holding us tight. How long would the arms hold? When would we do something that caused the wiles of enemy to get through and cause the demise of us and everything we love.

The fact is, God moved the sea "all that night."

During the long dark nights of our lives, God is often moving the sea that we feel hems us in. The insurmountable thing in our lives that keeps us from being productive and effective. The thing that keeps us from moving forward. As we wait in fear at night, God is moving the sea.

"All that night" that weary vigil
Passed; the day at last did break,
And they saw that God was working
"All that night" a path to make.

"All that night," O child of sorow,
Canst thou not they heartbreak stay?
Know thy God in darkest midnight
Works, as well as in the day.

I call you friends!

15 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.
John 15:15
Today is the first day of VBS and this is the verse we are learning. The children are learning a shortened version "Now you are my friends."

This is totally amazing, Jesus Christ, king of the universe has called us friends! Not servants, but friends!

We choose to be His servant but He chooses to treat us as friends! This is totally amazing!

The Bible story we are learning about today is when men bring their friend to Jesus for Healing in Luke 5:17-25.

I love this part:

20 When He saw their faith, He said to him, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.”

They brought Him to Jesus for healing and the first thing Jesus did was forgive his sins! You see healing is temporary because we all must "go the way of the earth." Forgiveness is permanent because that is what truly changes our lives and releases us from the caustic poison of sin and shame on our eternal souls.

My son is bemoaning the fact that he has to go today because "none of the other boys are going." I am praying for a blessing for him anyway as he learns that very often the road to follow Christ, particularly for men, is a lonely one.

Lord, please bless Bible School today and all of the workers. Reach out to these children and see our faith in you and forgive those we bring to you today. Bless us and keep us. We love you and give you all we are and all we have. In Jesus name. Amen.
